Story

Shoya Ishida began his journey as a reckless and popular elementary school student who hated boredom above all else. When Shoko Nishimiya, a deaf girl, transferred into his class, Shoya viewed her as a target for his entertainment, leading a campaign of bullying that eventually forced her to leave. However, the consequences were immediate; his friends turned on him, making him the new target of bullying. This trauma followed him into high school, where he became a social recluse, unable to look others in the eye and imagining 'X' marks over everyone's faces. Haunted by his past, he learns sign language and seeks out Shoko to apologize before intending to end his life. Instead of an end, their meeting marks the beginning of a painful but healing process where Shoya learns to listen to others and, more importantly, to forgive himself for his childhood cruelty.
