Johnny Silverhand, born Robert John Linder, is the iconic frontman of the band Samurai and a central figure in the Cyberpunk universe. A veteran of the Central American Conflict, he became a disillusioned Rockerboy using music to spark revolution against the megacorporations, specifically Arasaka. In 2023, he led a raid on Arasaka Tower that ended in a nuclear explosion and his apparent death. However, his consciousness was digitized using the Soulkiller program. Decades later, his engram is stored on a prototype biochip that ends up in the head of the mercenary V. Throughout the game, Johnny transitions from a cynical, narcissistic parasite to a complex ally, sharing his memories and radical ideologies while slowly overwriting V's personality through the Relic's nanite reconstruction.

In Night City, decades after the Fourth Corporate War, megacorporations govern through private armies, surveillance, contracts, and control of technology.
