Nate River, known as Near, is the younger of L's two successors raised at Wammy's House. After L's death, Near refuses to work with Mello and instead forms the SPK to hunt down Kira independently. Unlike L, who was more proactive, Near is extremely analytical and detached, often treating the investigation like a complex puzzle or a game. He is constantly seen playing with toys, dice, and finger puppets, which he uses to visualize his theories. Despite his youthful appearance and eccentricities, his intellect rivals L's, eventually allowing him to outmaneuver Light Yagami by exposing the flaws in Light's plan and the actions of his proxy, Teru Mikami.
