Onoda Sakamichi is the protagonist of Yowamushi Pedal. Initially, he is a shy, socially awkward otaku who loves anime and video games, specifically the series Love Hime. He has ridden a heavy 'mamachari' (commuter bike) since childhood to save money on train fare for his weekly 90km round trips to Akihabara. This grueling routine unknowingly developed his incredible leg strength and high-cadence climbing ability. Upon entering Sohoku High School, he hopes to join the anime club but finds it disbanded. After being challenged to a race by Shunsuke Imaizumi and Naruko Shoukichi, he discovers the joy of competitive cycling. He joins the Sohoku Bicycle Racing Club and becomes a specialist climber.
