Sakata Gintoki is the founder of Yorozuya Gin-chan. He is a samurai living in an era where aliens known as Amanto have invaded Earth and banned the use of swords. Despite the ban, he carries a wooden sword inscribed with Lake Toya. In his youth, he was known as the White Yaksha for his ferocious fighting style during the Joui War against the Amanto. After the war, he abandoned his life of violence to live a relatively peaceful, albeit broke, life. He lives above Otose's snack bar with Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura. He is characterized by his perm-like silver hair, dead fish eyes, and an obsession with Jump magazine and strawberry milk. Despite his lazy and irresponsible exterior, he possesses a strong moral code and will risk his life to protect his friends and his soul. He often breaks the fourth wall and engages in meta-commentary about the manga industry.

In an alternate Edo-era Japan reshaped by Amanto occupation, alien technology and colonial authority regulate daily life while sword carrying is forbidden. Beneath comic disorder, old samurai loyalties, bureaucracy, and criminal schemes collide. As owner of Yorozuya and a former Samurai, Gintoki works in Kabukicho, taking odd jobs and defending its fragile community from threats both absurd and deadly.
