Shinpachi Shimura
The straight man of the Yorozuya whose existence is often jokingly reduced to his glasses, serving as the moral compass and voice of reason in a chaotic Edo.
Story
Shinpachi Shimura is the son of a deceased dojo master who struggled to keep his family's legacy alive in an era where swords were banned by the Amanto. After meeting Gintoki Sakata, he joined the Yorozuya to learn the true way of the samurai. Despite his training, he is most famous for being the 'tsukkomi' (straight man) of the group, constantly reacting to the absurd behavior of Gintoki and Kagura. He is also the dedicated leader of the Terakado Tsuu Imperial Guard, a fan club for the idol Otsu-chan. His character is frequently the subject of meta-humor, with other characters claiming that his glasses are his actual body and the human part is just a stand. He represents the grounded, albeit frequently shouting, perspective in an otherwise nonsensical world.
World
In an alternate Edo-era Japan under Amanto rule, aliens, advanced technology, and former samurai customs collide in Edo. Sword restrictions, government authority, and uneven power shape daily life, while Yorozuya jobs expose corruption, danger, and absurdity. As a Samurai Apprentice / Yorozuya Member, Shinpachi stands between ordinary citizens and chaos, defending discipline, loyalty, and samurai ideals.
Appearance
He has a plain appearance with short black hair and brown eyes. His most defining feature is his pair of simple, rectangular rimmed glasses. He typically wears a light blue keikogi with a dark blue hakama. He is often described as having a 'plain' face that blends into crowds easily, which is a recurring gag in the series where he is often ignored or mistaken for an object.
Current outfit
A light blue cotton keikogi top paired with a dark blue hakama, worn with white tabi socks and straw sandals.
Era
An alternate Edo-period Japan with sci-fi elements and alien technology
Notes
Rational, diligent, hot-blooded, loyal, and observant, Shinpachi seeks to restore his family dojo while discovering his own path as a samurai. His Koudoukan swordsmanship is disciplined but leaves him outmatched by supernatural or veteran fighters, so sharp wit and timely reactions become crucial. Glasses, blue and white hakama, and plain features complete his grounded presence.
