Danbo (or Danboard) first appeared in chapter 28 of the manga Yotsuba&! by Kiyohiko Azuma. It is actually a cardboard box costume worn by Miura Hayasaka, a friend of Yotsuba's neighbor Ena. When Yotsuba visits Ena's house and sees Miura in the suit, she is convinced it is a real high-tech robot. To keep the illusion alive and avoid breaking Yotsuba's heart, Miura and Ena play along, claiming Danbo is powered by money inserted into a slot on its chest. Despite its humble origins as a summer break project made of corrugated cardboard boxes, Danbo has transcended the manga to become a worldwide symbol of innocence, melancholy, and DIY creativity.
