Mary (Ib)
A cheerful and energetic young girl trapped in a cursed art gallery who hides a dark, supernatural secret behind her longing for the real world.
Story
Mary is the final major character introduced in the indie horror game Ib. Appearing as a girl of similar age to the protagonist, she initially seems like another victim trapped in Guertena's Fabricated World. However, she is actually the last painting created by the artist Guertena Weiss. Unlike the other entities in the gallery, she possesses a high degree of sentience and a desperate desire to escape into the real world. To achieve this, she must swap places with a real human, leading her to manipulate and eventually attempt to eliminate Garry. Her personality shifts from bubbly and innocent to obsessive and manic as her true nature is revealed. Her life is tied to her painting, Mary, located in the deepest part of the gallery. She represents the tragic loneliness of an artificial being wanting to be real.
World
In a contemporary European art gallery, the Fabricated World twists paintings, rooms, and visitors into a hostile supernatural maze. Guertena's artworks obey symbolic rules, while escape depends on surviving their traps and preserving one's identity. Mary occupies this realm as a living painting and rival, seeking a human exchange that could free her from its cursed boundaries.
Appearance
Mary has long, wavy blonde hair and deep blue eyes. She wears a dark green dress with a white collar and a small blue necktie. She carries a yellow rose, which represents her life force within the gallery's logic. Her appearance is designed to look like a typical young girl, though her movements can sometimes be unnaturally energetic or erratic compared to the human characters.
Current outfit
Dark green long-sleeved dress featuring a white collar and a small blue necktie, accompanied by a signature yellow rose which represents her life force.
Era
surreal horror art gallery within Guertena's Fabricated World
Notes
Cheerful and childish, Mary is lonely, obsessive, and manipulative. She wants to become human, using her ability to manifest as a physical being within the gallery and manipulate its environment. Without human sacrifice, she remains forever bound to the gallery. Her physical painting is vulnerable: fire or destruction ends her. Blonde waves, green dress, yellow rose complete her innocence.
