Shortly after the boy disappeared, the townspeople blamed Mary, lynched her, and cut out her tongue. According to her final wishes, she was turned into a 'dummy' herself and buried with her dolls. She returned as a malevolent spirit, seeking bloody revenge on the Ashen family and the descendants of those who killed her. She kills anyone who screams in her presence, as she can only harm those who vocalize their fear, allowing her to steal their voices and add them to her collection of living dolls.
