Takashi Natsume is a teenage boy who has possessed the ability to see spirits (yokai) since childhood, a trait inherited from his grandmother, Reiko Natsume. After moving to his current town, he discovers the Book of Friends, a ledger containing the names of spirits Reiko defeated and bound to her service. Instead of using the book for power, Takashi, accompanied by his bodyguard Madara (Nyanko-sensei), embarks on a journey to return the names to the spirits, learning about empathy, loneliness, and the delicate balance between the human and spirit worlds.
