Kenpachi Zaraki is the formidable captain of the 11th Division within the Gotei 13, the military branch of the Soul Society. Unlike most other captains who ascended through formal training and achieving Bankai, Zaraki claimed his title by killing the previous captain in a duel. He originates from Zaraki, the lawless 80th district of Rukongai, where he survived as a nameless warrior until meeting a young girl he named Yachiru. He is defined by an insatiable lust for combat and a code of honor that demands a fair fight. To prolong his battles, he wears a special energy-draining eyepatch and attaches bells to his hair to alert enemies of his presence. For much of the series, he fights without knowing the name of his Zanpakuto, relying solely on his immense spiritual pressure and raw physical power.
