Sketch a Page Layout and Generate It
TL;DR. Open Sketch, pick a layout template or draw borders with the brush, then add numbered notes. Each note can follow seven beats: layout, camera, characters with @, balloons, narration, SFX, and style. Generate builds one page from the sketch plus those notes. If the sketch is bound to a panel, the result replaces that panel.
- Open SketchFrom a panel, hand-drawn edit carries that panel’s content in and binds the result so generate replaces that frame. From the sketch tab itself, you start a page that can land in the sketch gallery instead.
- Block the layoutPick a template — single frame, two columns, rows, four-panel, six-panel, or a large panel over two small ones — or draw borders with the layout brush. The brush is composition reference. Those strokes are not typeset into the final lettering. Eraser, undo, and clear affect strokes, not the written notes.
- Write each frameThe text tool drops a numbered marker. Select it and fill the note. Shortcuts insert camera language (wide, close-up, over-shoulder, low angle) and @ plus a character name. The seven-part scaffold is layout, camera, character, balloon, narration, SFX, and style. A page-level note covers mood that applies to every frame.
- Generate the pageGenerate sends the sketch and the notes to the model. A bound panel is replaced and you return toward the board. An unbound page is saved into the sketch gallery, where you can download it, delete it, or edit the draft again.
- New sketch when you want a blank pageNew sketch clears the canvas and saves a fresh draft on the chapter. Anything you had drawn on the current canvas is replaced, so finish or generate first if that draft mattered.
Sketch and Infinite Canvas do different jobs
Sketch builds a page from a layout drawing and text. The brush marks tell the model where the frames sit. The notes tell it who speaks and how the shot is framed.
Infinite Canvas starts from a picture that already exists. You mark a region and generate that patch. Use it when the page is right except a hand, a sign, or the eyes. Do not expect Sketch’s brush to inpaint one corner of a finished panel.
What each tool on the bar does
| Control | Effect |
|---|
| Layout brush | Frame borders and staging lines, used as composition reference |
| Eraser / clear | Remove strokes. Notes stay. |
| Text marker | A numbered frame you describe on the side |
| @ character | Inserts a cast member. The cast has to exist first. |
| Page note | Extra direction for the whole page |
| Generate | One multi-panel page, written back to a bound panel or stored in the gallery |
An empty canvas — no strokes and no notes — will not generate. Put down a layout or a sentence first.
